Class 6 Assignment(Final) - Intro to Fibrication

December 12, 2014 in Intro to Fabrication

617 During this semester, I learned a lot about different materials and method. How to make fabrication part for other project. I made wood box, drawer, acrylic lamp, wood candleholder, wood enclosure, wood shelf and button box for my PCOM final. So this week , I want to make something different which I haven't used it before.

Since Christmas day is coming, I decided to make some bow ties. I like wood soooo much, this time I want to try some different wood so I bought a 1/4 *3*24 and a 1/16*3*24 Walnut board from Blick. Some  soft Brass wire from Blick. Necklace and Joint from ToHo Shoji.

1 Design the pattern to the bow tie.

I wanted make wood bow tie in vintage style, so I design patterns in Illustrator to simulate the real wool fabric, also designed dear horn for decoration

2 Used Laser cutter to engrave the pattern at first, then cut it off.

3.  Sanding it

Put some water on it and sand it in both sides, to make it more smooth

4 . Used Laser cutter to engrave the pattern on the other side, use this way to make patterns in each side can connect exactly.

5. Made the dear on it

I want to make a 3D deer in front of the bow tie, cause I like deer so much and it's also fit the Christmas atmosphere.

Made the template for it, I used 1/16*3*24 Walnut board to make  a tinny dear. Used basswood as experiment.

6. Use super glue to attach all component together.

7. Use  soft Brass wire on the dear horn. (I want to make the horn more stronger, and the color of this piece of walnut is pale, add some golden color to make it more attractable, but it does't work really well, since the horn is so fragile and easy to be broken by the wires during the process.)

And I also used fabric in the bow ties' center to make it more adorable.1716
